Chongqing Jiaotong University, founded in 1951, is a teaching and research-oriented institution with a multi-tiered talent cultivation system encompassing bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. Jointly established by the Ministry of Transport and the Chongqing Municipal Government, it possesses distinct characteristics and strengths in transportation. Primarily focused on engineering, the university promotes the coordinated development of disciplines including engineering, management, science, economics, humanities, and law.
The university traces its origins to the Southwest Transportation College, established in 1951 to support the construction of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway and the development of Southwest China. It underwent several name changes before being restructured as Chongqing Transportation College in 1960. Between 1961 and 1963, the Civil Engineering Department of Chengdu Institute of Technology, the Metallurgy Department of Sichuan Institute of Metallurgy, and the Hydraulic Engineering Department of Wuhan Water Transport College were successively merged into the institution. In 1972, Chongqing Institute of Transportation merged with Chongqing Institute of Architecture and Engineering. In 1979, Chongqing Institute of Transportation resumed independent operation; that same year, Chongqing Navigation Engineering School was incorporated into the institution. In 1985, the university was approved to confer master's degrees. In 1986, the Southwest Water Transport Engineering Research Institute of the Ministry of Communications was integrated into Chongqing Institute of Transportation. In 1999, Chongqing Transportation School (formerly Chongqing River Transport School) came under the university's administration. In 2000, the university was transferred from the Ministry of Communications to Chongqing Municipality, adopting a management system jointly administered by the central government and local authorities, with Chongqing Municipality taking the lead. That same year, Chongqing Transportation Technical School came under the university's administration. In 2006, the institution was renamed Chongqing Jiaotong University and gained the authority to confer doctoral degrees.
The university comprises the South Bank Campus, Shuangfu Campus, and Daping Branch (Chongqing Southwest Water Transport Engineering Research Institute), covering an area of 3,120 mu (approximately 208 hectares). Its campus buildings span over 720,000 square meters, with fixed assets valued at nearly 3 billion yuan. Teaching and research equipment exceeds 260 million yuan in value.
