Portable fire extinguisher
Portable dry powder fire extinguishers, carbon dioxide, and foam extinguishers—at least 5 of each
A fire extinguisher is a portable firefighting tool. It contains chemical agents designed to extinguish fires. As a common fire prevention facility, fire extinguishers are stored in public areas or locations prone to fires. Different types of fire extinguishers contain distinct chemical agents, each specifically formulated for different fire causes. Proper usage is essential to avoid counterproductive effects and potential hazards.Below, the State Grid Electronic Technology team shares key knowledge about portable fire extinguishers.

I. Types of Portable Fire Extinguishers
There are many types of fire extinguishers, which can be further classified based on the type of extinguishing agent they contain: foam, dry powder, carbon dioxide, water, etc.
1. Dry powder fire extinguisher
2. Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguisher
3. Foam Fire Extinguisher
4. Water Fire Extinguisher
II. How to Use a Portable Fire Extinguisher
How to Use a Portable Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher
The specific steps are as follows:
1. When using a portable dry powder fire extinguisher, grasp the handle firmly and move quickly to the fire site.
2. Position the fire extinguisher approximately 5 meters from the fire source. When using outdoors, stand upwind.
3. Before use, invert the fire extinguisher several times to loosen the dry powder inside the cylinder.
4. When using an internal-charge or stored-pressure dry powder fire extinguisher, first pull out the safety pin. Hold the nozzle with one hand and firmly press down the handle with the other hand. The dry powder will then be discharged through the nozzle.
5. When using a dry powder fire extinguisher to extinguish a liquid spill fire, approach from the side of the flames. Aim the spray at the base of the flames, moving from near to far while sweeping left and right. Advance rapidly until the flames are completely extinguished.
6. When using a dry powder fire extinguisher to extinguish a fire involving flammable liquids in a container, aim the nozzle at the base of the flames from the side of the fire and sweep left and right. When flames are forced out of the container, advance quickly to extinguish all residual fires. During extinguishing, avoid pointing the nozzle directly at the liquid surface to prevent the impact force of the dry powder jet from causing oil splatter, which could spread the fire and complicate extinguishment.
7. When using a dry powder fire extinguisher to combat solid material fires, aim the nozzle at the most intense flames and sweep it back and forth. Ensure the dry powder agent is evenly distributed over the burning surface until the fire is completely extinguished.
8. When using a dry powder fire extinguisher, ensure it remains upright throughout the extinguishing process. Never lay it horizontally or invert it, as this will prevent powder discharge. Additionally, after extinguishing the fire, take precautions against reignition. Since dry powder extinguishers provide minimal cooling effect, reignition is likely if hot embers remain at the ignition point.
