Wuhan University of Technology was established on May 27, 2000, through the merger of the former Wuhan University of Technology, Wuhan University of Transportation Science and Technology, and Wuhan Automotive University. As a nationally key university directly under the Ministry of Education, it was among the first institutions included in the national “Project 211” for priority development. The university ranked 49th in the 2014 Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings, placing it among the top 100 institutions in Asia. It also secured a position within the 351-400 range in the 2014-2015 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, placing it among the top 400 universities globally.
The university currently operates across three campuses, covering over 4,000 acres with a total building area exceeding 1.56 million square meters. Its four modern libraries house a collection of more than 4 million volumes. The university employs 5,282 faculty and staff members, including 2,979 full-time teachers. Among the full-time faculty, there are 774 professors and 1,346 associate professors. The university boasts 2 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 member of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Belgium, 1 member of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, 3 shared academicians, 16 recipients of the National “Thousand Talents Program,” and 1 recipient of the National “Ten Thousand Talents Program.”Two chief scientists of the National “973 Program” and Major Scientific Research Programs, ten Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professors (including Distinguished Lecturers), three recipients of the National Teaching Master Award, six recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and 328 experts receiving special government allowances from the State Council and provincial governments.
The university offers disciplines spanning engineering, science, liberal arts, management, economics, law, philosophy, history, education, medicine, and arts. It currently provides 87 undergraduate programs, including 2 national key disciplines at the first-level subject level, 7 national key disciplines at the second-level subject level, 1 national key (cultivated) discipline, and 24 provincial key disciplines in Hubei. It offers 15 first-level doctoral programs, 38 first-level master's programs, and 17 postdoctoral research stations. The university provides 15 professional master's degree categories and 39 professional master's degree fields. The current enrollment includes over 37,000 undergraduate students, more than 16,000 doctoral and master's students, and over 1,000 international students.
The university has established 25 provincial-level and higher research bases in fields such as new materials, building materials, fiber optic sensing, new energy, transportation and logistics, electromechanical and automotive engineering, information technology, and resource environment. These include the State Key Laboratory of New Composite Materials Technology, the State Key Laboratory of Silicate Building Materials, the National Engineering Laboratory for Fiber Optic Sensing Technology, and the National Engineering Research Center for Water Transport Safety. The university has established talent development and scientific cooperation relationships with over 100 universities and research institutions in countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, France, Australia, Russia, and the Netherlands. It has appointed more than 300 renowned international scholars as visiting and honorary professors.Since 2007, the university has been approved to establish three Discipline Innovation and Talent Introduction Bases covering New Composite Materials Technology and Advanced Functional Materials, Key Technologies for High-Performance Ships, and Advanced Preparation Technology and Engineering Applications of Functional Thin Film New Materials. It has also established the International Joint Laboratory for New Composite Materials Technology and the International Science and Technology Cooperation Base for Environmentally Friendly Building Materials. In 2009, the university established the WUT-Harvard Joint Nano Key Laboratory with Harvard University. Charles M. Lieber, founder of international nanomaterials technology, member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and Harvard professor, serves as the laboratory director. In 2010, the university established the Joint Laboratory for New Energy Materials Technology with the University of Michigan. In 2012, WUT established the Joint Center for High-Performance Ship Technology with the University of Southampton, UK, and the Joint Laboratory for Internet of Things Technology with the University of Calabria, Italy. In 2013, it established the Joint Laboratory for Concrete Science and Technology with the University of California, Berkeley, USA, and the Joint Laboratory for Intelligent Equipment with the University of Birmingham, UK. In 2011, WUT joined the Industry-Academia-Research Strategic Alliance of the U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center.
Over the past decade, the university has invested more than 5 billion yuan in scientific research and development, yielding a significant number of major technological achievements through independent innovation. Since 2010, the university has received 12 national science and technology awards as the primary recipient institution. In 2014, the university's science and technology funding reached 714 million yuan. The university operates the Wuhan University of Technology Science Park in “Wuhan • China Optics Valley,” covering an area of 820 mu (approximately 135 acres). That same year, the university's high-tech industries generated sales revenue of 1.471 billion yuan.
Over the past 60 years since its founding, the university has educated more than 400,000 graduates and established 68 alumni associations worldwide. It maintains close ties with the three major industries originally associated with its predecessor institutions, having established industry boards for building materials and construction, transportation, and automotive sectors. These boards comprise 219 leading enterprises from the three industries and convene annual meetings to deliberate on major issues concerning the university's collaborative development with these sectors.
Over six decades of educational practice, Wuhan University of Technology has cultivated an institutional philosophy centered on “student-centered education and academic excellence,” forging a university spirit of “integrity, scholarship, and pursuit of excellence.” It has nurtured generation after generation of outstanding talents who lead with wisdom, possess exceptional aspirations and capabilities, and drive progress across three major industries and regional development.“Building an outstanding university that satisfies the people and commands global admiration” has become the institution's lofty ideal and core value pursuit, inspiring successive generations of WUT members to strive tirelessly toward this goal.
